Our experts at SiDEX recently completed a window replacement in Kenosha, WI for the Hoffman family. They wanted to have more of an open concept and have a ledge on the window for plants and decorations. Converting a 3 sectional to a bay window can be a pretty straight forward project as long as we do not run into any surprises and the opening size stays the same. Here is a description of how the project is done.
Description of Window Replacement in Kenosha, WI:
Converting a 3 sectional to a bay window can be a pretty straight forward project as long as we do not run into any surprises and the opening size stays the same. Here is a description of how the project is done.
1. Planning and preparation:
- Measure the Opening: Ensure the existing rough opening can accommodate the new bay window. Bay windows typically project outward, so structural reinforcements might be needed.
2. Removing the Existing Window
- Remove Trim & Siding: Carefully take out the interior and exterior trim without damaging surrounding materials.
- Detach the Window Frame: Use a utility knife to cut through caulk and pry the window frame out.
- Inspect the Opening: Check for damage or rot in the framing, and make repairs as needed.
3. Preparing for the Bay Window
- Reinforce the Header: Because bay windows are heavier, you may need to reinforce the header and studs for additional support.
- Build a Support Structure (if needed): Install a support bracket, corbels, or cables depending on the bay window’s weight and projection.
- Install a New Window Sill: The new sill should be level and extend to support the bay window properly.
4. Installing the Bay Window
- Position the Window: Carefully place the bay window into the opening, ensuring it’s centered and level.
- Secure the Window: Attach the top, bottom, and sides using screws into the framing studs.
5. Sealing & Finishing
- Insulate Gaps: Use foam insulation or fiberglass to fill any gaps between the window and framing.
- Apply Flashing & Caulking: Seal all edges with flashing tape and waterproof caulk to prevent leaks.
- Reinstall Trim & Siding: Finish the exterior and interior trim for a polished look
